Who can focus on productivity, and safety in the work place with all this uncertainty? There is little doubt that furloughs, government shut down, and budget cuts makes for an unhappy workforce. When government workers and their families worry about being furloughed, you can be certain that with it, comes a lot of work place stress, lack of productivity, and the heightened chance of work place accidents. Here are 5 ways and means managers and leaders can help employees deal with heavy issues involving the government shut down, and get back on track to a full and fruitful house: 1. Spoon full of HEARTS - Leaders should take time to greet their coworkers with a BIG SMILE every day. Mom (or Mary Poppins) was right when she said, “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down,” so give a little happiness from your heart, as it will certainly bring joy, even during stressful times. 2. DIAMONDS in the Rough - Be sure to tell your co-workers, and employees how much you appreciate them. When employees feel appreciated, they are proud for who they work for. This helps them stay focused on their own initiatives at work. 3. JACK of all Trades – Reinforce safety in the work place. When employees are worried or distracted they are not thinking about safety. Distractions could cause deadly accidents, so be sure to remind employees the importance to have “eyes on safety” at all times. 4. DEUCES can be Wild – Managers must be mentors. Helping other employees follow their path supports them to stay on track and to soar within the company. Even when outside factors are beyond our control, we still can achieve personal goals. 5. KING for a day – Pay it forward and do something nice for a friend, a family member, a neighbor, or even a complete stranger. Random acts of kindness go a long way during stressful times. Although the House of cards have seemed to fallen in Congress, and they have yet to find a winning hand, let’s all do our part to build a better, stronger, more unified deck.
