The Journey of OneVeronika Scott, truly is the fisherman’s teacher. She took a simple (and brilliant) concept and turned it into teaching the homeless how to fish for themselves. In 2010 at age 22, Scott took on her college assignment to design a unique product that’s never been done before. She ignored the naysayers, and insisted she could help keep the homeless warm during the day and the night with only one garment. Scott’s product was a coat that transformed into a sleeping bag for the homeless population of Detroit. The latest design is a lightweight, self-heated and waterproof coat with pockets, a hood and a section that pulls out to become the foot of the sleeping bag. It can be rolled up and turned into a shoulder bag for the warmer months. For five months, and even after her class ended, Scott worked with the homeless at the shelter Neighborhood Service Organization in Detroit to develop the first prototype of the coat. “I became known as the crazy coat lady,” Scott said.
“Teach us how to Fish!”Scott said the coat was initially meant to offer comfort and pride for the homeless, but one homeless woman’s words changed that.
“She said, ‘Your coats don’t matter, jobs matter. We need jobs, not coats,’” Scott said. “It was then about who I could employ.”Scott formed the non-profit organization, The Empowerment Plan, which not only employees the homeless but also provides coats/sleeping bags for homeless people around the world. Take The Athletic Mindset challenge in 2015, and bring your ideas to the next level. Put them to paper, share them, and take action like Veronika Scott did. Let’s all take the initiative to teach others how to fish, so we can all prosper in the coming new year!
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
